Cristian Rico, M.D., serves as AltaMed’s Vice President of Medical Groups, overseeing the staff of all primary clinics, dental services, and HIV services. During a period of high change and growth, he maintains a sharp focus on patient care. His commitment to the underserved patient populations of Southern California drives him to improve quality, patient experience and access to care.

Dr. Rico is a competent and passionate family medicine physician, as demonstrated by his personal Quality and Patient Satisfaction scores.  As an RMD, Dr. Rico’s first task was to improve medical provider recruitment.  By partnering with Human Resources, he was able to create an efficient and sustainable process to recruit competent providers with desirable attributes.  Through this process, he also identified emerging leaders who have gone on to become Medical Directors as well as Regional Medical Directors.  Dr. Rico’s leadership has helped AltaMed make significant strides in improving quality and patient satisfaction across the primary care division.  He has worked with several medical schools, nurse practitioner schools, and physician assistant schools to expose students to community medicine at AltaMed for firsthand experience.

A native resident of Southern California, Dr. Rico completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Riverside, medical school at Charles R. Drew/UCLA School of Medicine and a family medicine residency at White Memorial Medical Center.  Dr. Rico has dedicated his career to the underserved communities of East Los Angeles. He joined AltaMed Health Services as a staff physician in 2004, served as Medical Director for AltaMed Medical and Dental Group – El Monte, from 2005-2010, served as Regional Medical Director (RMD) for Los Angeles County from 2010-2015.

Dr. Rico also acts as an AltaMed media spokesperson, often offering subject matter expertise on a wide variety of topics, including the Affordable Care Act, culturally competent care, medically underserved areas, community needs, and more. 

Dr. Rico is a married father of two boys, loves running and going to the gym, and is a passionate concert-goer.
